As a SPIE Student Member:

• Connect with students and mentors. Join your school’s SPIE Student Chapter. No chapter at your school? It’s easy to start an SPIE Student Chapter. SPIE offers you financial and administrative resources to get you on your way.


• Learn about the latest optics and photonics technology by reading your free subscription to oemagazine. And, with your Student Membership you choose one online journal—choose from Optical Engineering, Journal of Biomedical Optics, Journal of Electronic Imaging, or Journal of Microlithography, Microfabrication, and Microsystems.


• Apply for an SPIE Scholarship. Last year, the Society allocated over $260,000 in scholarships and grants, only SPIE Student Members are eligible to apply.

• Find an internship or career at SPIEWorks.com, the premier web site for optics and photonics companies looking for talent. You can view current open positions and internships, post your resume for free, and set up an account to receive job alerts to your email inbox.

SPIE Student Scholarships

          As a student, every bit of financial assistance is key. A huge benefit of being an SPIE Student Member is being able to apply for scholarships that support you in your involvement in optics and photonics studies and research. Don’t let something like of a lack of financial resources hold you back from achieving your dreams in optical science, engineering or a related field—apply for a scholarship today. 

Eligibility Requirements

          To be eligible, all scholarship applicants must:

• Be a member of SPIE. Nonmembers may submit an application for SPIE Student Membership with the completed Scholarship Application; dues payment must accompany the membership application to qualify. Note: High School students may receive a complimentary Student Membership after submitting a membership application.

• Be enrolled full-time in an optics, photonics, imaging, optoelectronics, or related program at an accredited educational institution for the academic year in which the award will be used. 

• Submit an Annual Scholarship Award Report if reapplying. Your application must show new activities, beyond those upon which a previous award was based.

• Submit a completed Scholarship Application, two sealed letters of reference, a 450-word essay, and the Annual Scholarship Award Report (if applicable) to SPIE. 

 

          The SPIE Scholarship Committee evaluates applications and makes final award recommendations to the SPIE Board of Directors annually. Applications are judged on the basis of the long-range contribution the recipient will make to the optics community.
